As a community of learners, we have adopted the Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) for ELA and Mathematics. Coral Academy of Science has a defined rigorous curriculum for our K-5 students.
Our English Language Arts program uses McGraw-Hill Education Wonders. Wonders is a research-based, developmental reading and language arts program for kindergarten through fifth grade. The foundation of the program is its high-quality children’s literature, as well as informational texts. Through the Student Editions, students are exposed to a variety of genres. Wonders reflects current, confirmed research and prioritizes and sequences essential skills and strategies into a clear, organized model for rigorous instruction. Wonders features an organized, direct approach to teaching reading. The program emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing. To meet the needs of all learners, the teachers use supplemental materials such as high-quality novels and little readers to enrich the learning.
Our math curriculum is Reveal Math. It is for Kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The program incorporates both inquiry-focused and teacher-guided instructional strategies within each lesson.
For science, we are implementing Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch to implement the Next Generation Science Standards. Next Generation Science Standards identifies the science all K-12 students should know. These new standards are based on the National Research Council’s A Framework for K-12 Science Education. The National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Achieve have partnered to create standards through a collaborative state-led process. The standards are rich in content and practice and arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education.
